In addition to producing primary aluminum, alumina has other important industrial uses. Alumina is often used as a filler for plastics. This compound is also widely used as abrasive, and it is a cheap substitute for industrial diamond. Alumina flakes have a reflective effect in automotive paints. The largest use of alumina occurs in oil refineries, where alumina compounds are used to convert hazardous hydrogen sulfide waste gas into elemental sulfur.
